The Hollywood secret has been revealed for quite some time now. It appears that many stars and influencers may not have been entirely truthful when claiming to have lost weight solely through "eating clean" and doing Pilates. Instead, a significant number of them have been utilizing a medication known as Semaglutide, which is marketed under various names like Ozempic, Wegovy (injections), or the pill form named Rybelsus. It is wise to approach health advice from these individuals with a hint of skepticism, considering their potential lack of transparency. This newfound information sheds light on how they managed to maintain their extreme diets effortlessly. The crucial question that arises is whether this approach could benefit one's weight loss and overall health journey.

First and foremost, it is essential that any dietary guidance you receive is provided by a qualified professional such as a dietician or medical practitioner specializing in nutrition.

My approach is based on what is effective for enhancing your long-term health and fitness. I prioritize strategies that benefit your overall well-being rather than focusing solely on short-term outcomes that may compromise your future health. Recent research consistently highlights the benefits of following a diet similar to the Mediterranean Diet, which emphasizes a variety of nutrient-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, lean proteins, and healthy fats. This diet is renowned for its positive impact on health. However, if you find success with a different approach, such as the carnivore diet, and it aligns with the aforementioned criteria, I fully endorse your choice. As long as your health indicators, such as blood work and cardiovascular health, remain favorable, I support your dietary preferences. It is worth exploring whether this diet is suitable for long-term adherence, but that discussion can be saved for another occasion. I have contemplated the idea of a more cyclical and seasonal approach to eating, considering historical dietary patterns. At one time we would have eaten more plants during harvest season and perhaps more meat during winter. My upcoming book, "The Paleo Vegan Seasonal Cyclical Diet," delves into this concept and will be released next year. 😉

This discussion ties into the topic of diet medications that individuals are using or contemplating. Before considering these drugs for weight management, it is important to understand their mechanisms and effects.

How do weight loss drugs work?

We could delve into intricate details, but let's refrain from doing so. If anyone desires a more profound comprehension of the biochemical interactions, feel free to contact me for further elaboration. Essentially, these medications mimic the functions of a naturally occurring hormone known as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). Upon reaching the brain, this hormone signals satiety, reducing appetite. Moreover, it slows food movement through the gastrointestinal tract, prolonging the feeling of fullness. Some individuals have reported that while on these medications, even if they experience hunger or cravings, they promptly feel satiated or even nauseated after consuming a small amount. The potential for weight loss is evident. There have been reports of athletes (and non-athletes) using this drug to aid in weight management, sometimes in conjunction with testosterone to enhance muscle mass during diet and exercise. It is crucial to remember that altering the delicate balance of the human body's chemical composition comes with consequences, often only realized after it's too late.

What are the downsides of using weight loss drugs?

  • Over half of individuals using Semaglutide may initially experience nausea, which tends to diminish with continued use of the medication.

  • Some patients may encounter vomiting and diarrhea.

  • While there is a potential risk of pancreatitis for some, this seems to be less common than initially reported.

  • There is a concern regarding an elevated risk of thyroid cancer, particularly for individuals using the medication long-term or with a family history of thyroid cancer.

  • Some individuals experience blurred vision and individuals with pre-existing diabetic retinopathy may experience a worsening of the condition.

  • Potential for hypoglycemia exists.

  • Possibility of gallbladder issues.

  • Cost-wise, without insurance, these medications can range from approximately $900 to $1,400 per month.

  • The effects of the drug cease upon discontinuation, increasing the risk of weight regain, especially without a proper transition plan.

What are the benefits of using weight loss drugs?

  • One of the main advantages is their effectiveness in promoting weight loss.

  • Many individuals notice enhancements in their blood profiles, such as:

  • Decreased blood pressure

  • Reduced cholesterol levels

  • Lower blood sugar levels

  • Decreased waist circumference, which is associated with a lower risk of heart-related issues.

  • Weight loss ranging from 5% to 20% of their body weight.

Should I consider weight loss drugs?

Ultimately, the decision regarding weight loss strategies should involve input from you, your family, and your doctor. However, there are several factors to consider and discuss, such as:

  • Having a long-term plan focused on future health.

  • Considering the need for an exercise and diet regimen to sustain weight loss without relying solely on medications.

  • Evaluating your current health status and whether weight loss could mitigate any immediate health risks.

  • Avoiding the intermittent use of weight loss drugs as a long-term solution.

Remember that overall wellness is not solely determined by weight, as being thin does not necessarily equate to being healthy. Prioritize exercise and a balanced diet in your health strategy.
